About this tool
The image converter changes pictures from one file format to another: JPG, PNG or WebP, and AVIF if your browser can create it. You can convert many images in one go, set the quality for lossy formats, fill transparent areas with a colour when saving as JPG, and optionally shrink large images to a maximum width.
The conversion happens inside your browser using the built-in canvas. Your images are not uploaded to any server, and nothing is stored once you close the page.
How to use it
- Drag images onto the drop area, or choose them from your device. You can add up to 30 images of up to 25 MB each.
- Pick the output format. For JPG and WebP, set the quality. For JPG, choose the background colour used where the image is transparent.
- Optionally enter a maximum width. Wider images are scaled down with the same proportions; smaller ones are left alone.
- Press Convert and wait for each file to finish. The list shows the original and new file size.
- Download files one by one, or use Download all as ZIP when you have converted two or more.
Frequently asked questions
- Are my images uploaded anywhere?
- No. Files are read and converted on your own device by your browser. They never leave it.
- What is the difference between JPG, PNG and WebP?
- JPG is a lossy format that suits photos and has no transparency. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which suits screenshots, logos and graphics, but files are often larger. WebP can be lossy or lossless, supports transparency and is usually smaller than JPG or PNG, though a few older apps cannot open it.
- Why does converting PNG to JPG remove transparency?
- JPG cannot store transparent pixels. Transparent areas must be filled with a solid colour, so this tool fills them with the background colour you choose (white by default).
- What does the quality setting do?
- It applies to JPG, WebP and AVIF. A lower value makes a smaller file by discarding more detail; a higher value keeps more detail at a larger size. PNG is lossless, so it has no quality setting.
- Does converting change the image quality?
- Converting to PNG keeps the pixels as they are. Converting to a lossy format discards some detail, and converting an already lossy file again can add more artefacts, so keep your originals. Your original files are never modified.
- Are there limits on files?
- You can add up to 30 images at a time, each up to 25 MB. Files that are not images, are empty or are too large are skipped, and the reason is shown. Very large pictures may fail on devices with little memory; try a smaller maximum width.
